Chapter Fourteen

The Aftermath

Life was fickle, fragile, and unpredictable. Over the course of one night, a family man could lose his entire family in an act of senseless violence. In a matter of hours—mere hours—an innocent family could be slaughtered because of another person’s actions. It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t appropriate, but such was life.

Bradley struggled to his feet, whimpering. The slightest movement caused the sharpest, hottest pain to shoot through his body. His foot slid in every direction as he took a step forward, but he managed to stay on his feet.

Blood flooded the kitchen floor. Bloody handprints stained the walls and countertops, too. A few droplets of blood even landed on the ceiling during the fight. It was a bloodbath—a tragic massacre.

Bradley grimaced in pain as he moved slowly through the kitchen, his hand over the massive gash on his stomach. The sound of his heavy breathing and lumbering footsteps as well as the sound of blood plopping echoed through the otherwise quiet house. He felt smothered by the tense silence hanging over him.

He held his hand over his mouth and cried as he spotted his daughter on the floor. He mumbled incoherently, his lips trembling uncontrollably. He knelt down beside Allison, turned her over onto her back, and placed her head on his lap. Her cheeks and ears were bloody, but most of her face was still clean—pale, cold, but clean. It was a heartbreaking sight.

Tears rained down from his eyes and bloody saliva dripped from his chin as he sobbed. He tried to caress her face, like he did when he comforted her before bedtime, but he couldn’t stop his fingers from shaking. He accepted her death, and he accepted his guilt. Although he witnessed her death and he knew Cory pulled the trigger, he genuinely felt like he murdered her with his own hands.

His voice hoarse, he shouted, “I’m sorry, Allie! This wasn’t supposed to happen! Not like this, baby. No, no… I’m sorry! Please for–”

Ow!–he yelped as a jolt of pain surged from his mutilated abdomen. His constant wheezing, groaning, and crying aggravated the wound.

He barked, “Goddammit!”

How dare the frailty of humans stop him from mourning?

He looked into the living room and frowned at his wife’s body. He wrapped his arm around his daughter’s chest, then he crawled towards his wife, dragging Allison’s body with him. He left a trail of smeared blood behind him. The wound on his stomach wouldn’t stop bleeding. He felt lethargic and lightheaded, but he pushed through it—or, he crawled through it.

On the floor, he leaned back against the recliner and caught his breath. Then he pulled Karen’s body closer to him. He placed their heads on his lap, both of them facing the ceiling. Looking at Allison, he could pretend she was sleeping. The screwdriver protruding from Karen’s eye was impossible to ignore, though.

Bradley fought to keep a straight face, but he couldn’t help himself. He cried again, despite the burning pain caused by each heavy breath. A cold sweat drenched his body, blending with the warm blood oozing out of his wounds.
